Don’t Look Back

Another accidental full game Let’s Play: Don’t Look Back is quite a brilliant minimalist platformer by Terry Cavanagh. I wasn’t expecting too much to develop by the end at first, but after a while I started to grasp that there was something deeper going on, then at the ending it hit me pretty hard that this was a game everyone should see and know about. It’s short, but great.

The whole premise of this game seems to be based on the story of Orpheus and Eurydice from Greek mythology, where Orpheus goes to the land of the dead to bring back his wife, Eurydice. He makes a deal with Hades that she will follow behind him as he travels home, but he was not allowed to look back to glance upon her until they reached the land of the living. Orpheus, thinking Hades had tricked him, could not hold his curiosity long enough, and looked behind him before they got to the land of the living, and as he did, he saw Eurydice just as she disappeared back into the land of the dead. He was later killed on the orders of another god, and then reunited with his wife after death.
