Pixel: ru² (Preview Build)

Today on Indie Impressions we’re going to have a look at Pixel: ru² by Wolfenhex. It’s a very early version of a puzzle/platformer with a lot of potential and just generally a lot going on. There is gravity manipulation, world flipping, color changing, and color based combat… to be honest it was actually a little overwhelming, but I recognize that there’s still a lot of ground to be covered for a slow and steady build toward teaching the player how to navigate all the possibilities in this one.     Thank you very much for doing a video of Pixel: ru².

    We’re aware that there’s a learning curve and that an interactive tutorial is needed, and we’re working on that. We’ve been taking the game to conventions for people to play, test ideas, and give feedback. We’re able to use these events to see where new players get stuck and try to design a better system for them.

    The Syntax Error level is a later level in the game. We picked it for the demo because it has many of the gameplay elements in it. It also has a good puzzle with using the box as a platform.

    Those flashing ones and zeros are bonus points that improve your score. We are working on having a leaderboard for each level. When we take the game to a convention, we have players compete on a local leaderboard there. Last Saturday, someone that was both red-green and blue-yellow colorblind came in second place.

    One thing that wasn’t talked about much in the video was the combat. Something that isn’t taught in the game, but really needs to be is that you shoot enemies with the opposite color. For example, a blue enemy you shoot with yellow. This will turn them white and make them a dead pixel.

    Something else that isn’t in the video is what happens when you reach the goal on Syntax Error. The background layers line up and form an image.

    Such a simple and entertaining puzzle game. Wonder if the background needs a recheck, sometimes it makes it a little difficult to see some paths.
